Higginson was also one of the "Secret Six" who met with John Brown in Boston to plan for the violent overthrow of slavery and financed Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry. After Brown's capture, Higginson tried to organize his escape, but failed. Other members of the "Secret Six" fled the country, and although Higginson remained, he was never arrested.
